Our mission is to improve literacy levels for all children in our community, by ensuring that all programs serving young children include a literacy focus.
About Us
Our vision Beginning at birth, our children will have access to a community rich in resources and, supported by their families and caregivers, will emerge as life-long learners of literacy.
Guiding Principles of ELH are to advocate for and promote programs that:
*bring books and children together in a meaningful way
*help children to be ready to learn and be successful at school
*improve literacy rates in the community
*support families and caregivers including those from
diverse cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, in their
role of developing early literacy in the children
*support and bring together community groups and agencies
in diverse sectors to develop early literacy programs and
initiatives
*always aim to be a partner in coordinating children’s
initiatives in this community
*work to identify and bridge gaps in literacy service delivery
ELH activities will focus on encouraging Community Early Literacy Programs to:
*Recognize and be sensitive to the culture and values of each
family
*Support families and empower them
*Be built on the best of existing research as it relates to the
healthy development of children
